Chuki’s Powder Room

merwash Chuki’s Powder Room

Many of you know that my “Studio” is actually our basement tricked out as a workshop and a repository for the overspill of the creative juices I leak on a constant basis.  It’s dark, but it works, and I like the cozy feel of a darker space.

I share my dungeon studio with only one other soul. Chuki-the-cat. Try as I might, the furry phenom seems to prefer lying on the jutting topography of my keyboard than his cozy pillow upstairs on the couch with Adam.  And he has only one possession down there: his litter box.  The current littler box is not up to Chuki’s discriminating decorating standards and it is true that there is no way to disguise these terrible Tupperware-like litter boxes as anything but a house for cat poop.

Inspired by a post on Shelterrific about SkyMall’s classy Kitty Commode, I decided to do a little search for other pretty litterbox shelters that won’t incite a home decorating intervention by marauding hosts of HGTV reality shows. Here’s what I found:

Wicker Litterbox Cover from from Bay Isle available at Hunter K-9 Gear.  The design won’t meld into your house seamlessly (it will always be quite obvious that this is a litter box) but it is not expensive and the wicker structure and large cutouts on front and back will make it a brighter and less-smelly place for kitty.

Two Door Litter Box Cabinet available at catsplay.com. When price is no option this is a gorgeous piece of furniture. I wonder if it’s dark and scary inside if you’re a cat?

Rustic Alder Litterbox Cabinet with Sagauro Ribs from Catsplay.  It’s a slightly random but beautiful piece of furniture that will fit nicely into the remote, but still visible, areas of our home where the litter usually lives.

If your cat has an independent source of income and would be willing to chip in, you could afford the Litterbox Furniture Style F1 (catchy name…), also from Catsplay. You also have to have a fairly gigantic home in order to be able to dedicate this much real estate to housing animal poop, but the top section is handy to hide the bin of new litter. What’s the point of a designer litterbox if you’re gonna plunk an ugly plastic bin of  litter beside it?

Chuki’s all for the Style F1 box, so I have to go proof-read his resume for his job interview to be able to afford it. He wants to sell flip-flops.

Love love love your blog’s design - the pull tab rocks - and the kitty furniture is total cuteness. Makes me want to go out and get a kitty!

Thanks! I wish I could say I designed it, but, alas, it was designed by the brilliant Derek Punsalan of 5thirtyone (link at bottom of footer). It was exactly what I envisioned.

I do have a kitty (the aforementioned Chuki) but unless he comes into some money from an inhertitance or winning the lottery there is no way I can afford these.
Cheers!
Tellie

this was a laugh out loud funny post. i also share my basement studio with the kitty and have developed several mechanisms for cohabiting. 1) evacuate if the kitty heads toward the litter box. you’ll need at least 30 minutes or a gas mask before returning. 2) keep a creativity candle burning when in studio. this reduces the return time to about 15 min. 3) scoop the darn thing immediately following mandatory break. fortunately, his box is near the outside door where i can keep a trash can.

of all of the above, i think i like the cottagey one the best, but would’t want it anywhere near my bathroom. i wonder if its what i am feeding him. peeeeeeeee-ewwwwwwww.

At first I thought “this is odd” and then I looked closer at the first picture and said “holey ka-moley! That’s my cat!” After seeing an identical twin to my own cat coming out of the cute little white cupboard, I realized that I actually really like that.
